Concept Design Phase

logo
"A good process will focus clearly on deliverables such as
Schedule, Cost and Quality."

"The concept phase is used to formalise ideas and prove that they are viable"

"One additional pound spent in the concept phase may save you 1000 in the design phase""

The Concept Phase does not have to be fuzzy

Concept flow
The " fuzzy front end"  of innovation is a well used phrase that we do not necessarily go along with.

Projects that are based on viable ideas can go nowhere if this phase is not structured and well managed.

The Concept Phase means a short intensive period of 2 to 8 months, depending on the complexity of the project, the resources and the available know-how.

This concept work is done in an atmosphere of high communication by a multi-functional team of skilled professionals with the aim of reaching a high degree of certainty and a quantifiable level of risk.

The output of the Concept Phase is for example:
(a) the finally selected and definitive aesthetic design.
(b) viable defined mechanical architecture..
(c) the revised specification for the whole range

One of the most important rules in the working method during the Concept Phase is to make sure that the Project Team stays on track and that information between team members is made official. All kinds of information may circulate between the various persons and functions, but it is vital that clarity is brought to any thought processes for future reference. Milestones in the concept phase

ExamplesA – Concept Meeting (first project assignment)
B – Product Concept Confirmation - Selection from favoured solutions
C – Electrical Architecture Confirmation- Prototype assembly and test
D – Cosmetic Presentation - Select mechanical solutions
E – Mechanical Architecture Confirmation- CAD drawings and simulation
Kick-Off Meeting (Start of Design Phase)

Information here is relevent to one particular type of product. We advise you on the most relavent process for your requirement and if required can work with your team to bring clarity and less cost risk to your development process...

We strongly advocate front loading in new product development.
